2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review

Intro

Who says the wagon is dead? Certainly not Porsche. The German auto manufacturer will be offering an electric vehicle wagon this summer.

The electric-powered 2022 Taycan Cross Turismo is expected to be available at Porsche dealerships this summer. Porsche has already begun accepting deposits from interested buyers of the Turismo, which starts at roughly $90,900 and will be the only electric wagon on sale in the U.S.

Operating with Volkswagen as its parent company since 2012, Porsche hasn’t rested on its considerable laurels as the automobile industry has turned its attention to producing electric vehicles (EV). Porsche engineers have been hard at work trying to stay current, and the results have been impressive.

Arguably the first real Tesla competitor, the original Taycan (pronounced TIE-kahn) is an extremely fast sports sedan, powerful and neck-snapping quick. The Turismo fits the Porsche profile, an important element because it puts a premium on designing EVs that stays true to its line. The Taycan models are positioned above the Porsche Panamera, a stylish-looking plug-in hybrid EV sedan.

Exterior Style

The folks at Porsche say the Turismo is simply a well-rounded version of the sleek Taycan sedan. But from this vantage point it is much different, starting with its unique wagon appearance. The Turismo also has off-road capacity that doesn’t exist in Taycan sedan mode.

The flat roofline extends backwards and forms the basis of the wagon’s rear end style. A glass roof is also an clipoption. The Turismo has black plastic fender flares and an upright tailgate that opens with either the push of a button or remotely with a key fob.

All four Taycan Cross Turismo trim models (4, 4S, Turbo, Turbo S) come standard with an 83.7-kWh battery pack, two electric motors, all-wheel drive, plus a unique air suspension that raises the wagon 0.8-inch higher than the sedan.

Interior Space

The Turismo is a long vehicle with a low-slung roofline, allowing for a little more headroom than the sedan. The Turismo offers an additional 0.35 inches of headroom in the front seats and much more in the back – 3.62 inches of extra headroom, plenty for even the tallest adults.

The cabin is well thought out and features a 10.9-inch touchscreen with another 8.4-inch screen below that handles climate and a few other controls. There’s also a 16.8-inch digital gauge. Seating is roomy and comfortable front and back. The cargo area is 15 cubic feet and with the Turismo’s rear seats folded forward, the space expands to 42.8 cubes. There’s also a 2.9-cubic-foot front trunk (frunk).

Charging and Range

Although no exact range has been announced, it’s anticipated that the Turismo should be in the 200-230-mile vicinity. With a Level 2 charging station, roughly 15-20 miles of range can be added per hour of charging. Many Level 2 charging stations can be found at places of hospitality, shopping centers, workplaces, or installed at home garages. Using a 270-kWh charging system, the wagon is expected to go from nearly depleted to around 80-percent charged in under 23 minutes. 

Performance

As one might expect, performance is impressive. The Turismo has two permanent-magnet synchronous motors that generate four different horsepower options (482, 562, 670, 750) which all benefit from overboost – turbocharger at a higher pressure. It features five driving modes (Range, Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual) and has been clocked going 0-60 mph between approximately 4.8 (base model) and 3.1 seconds.

The Turismo won’t be climbing over rocks off-road, but it does have a Gravel setting that raises the suspension 0.39 inches. The Off-Road Package has mapping for the stability and traction control systems, making the Turismo capable of traveling over gravel, sand and mud.

Handling for the Taycan Cross Turismo nearly matches the high level of the Taycan sedan. The steering response is excellent and the cornering is superb, providing the driver a tremendous feeling of confidence.

Conclusion

Porsche continues to evolve, adding one more derivative of the impressive all-electric Taycan. The Turismo has a high price tag but comes with many upsides in addition to its beautiful exterior. It will be interesting to see how the Porsche Turismo is embraced by car buyers.
